Re: This list is not all-inclusive.
Wed, December 3, 2003 - 11:09 PMGreat list. I agree with most of your choices.
And I would add Miklos Rosa's "Spellbound." And Wojciech Kilar's "Dracula" score. Great cello and bass writing.
And nobody has mentioned Vangelis' "Blade Runner" yet. One of the best scores of my lifetime. Maybe the best electronic score ever.
And as I mentioned elsewhere, Michael Kamen's scores for "The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen" and "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves."
But thanks especially for mentioning "Hook." GREAT score for a flawed movie. So good, he keeps recycling it in the "Harry Potter" series. -
-
Re: This list is not all-inclusive.
Mon, December 8, 2003 - 4:42 PMLike I said, the list isn't all inclusive. "Spellbound" is definitely a classic... there are plenty of other Miklos Rozsa scores that are phenomenal, including "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" and others.
I do like "Blade Runner," and I also like Vangelis' "1492," despite the fact that many have complained about the anachronistic element.
I also like Kamen's music for "Brazil" and "The Dead Zone."
While I agree that the "Harry Potter" scores draw heavily on "Hook," I like the fact that they are a sort of return to form for him towards a more leitmotivic style. "Hook" is so good that it supports that kind of revisiting. I must mention that the first half of the first film also draws from "Superman" in its film/music interaction if not stylistically. -

Re: This list is not all-inclusive.
Thu, January 22, 2004 - 10:36 PMThanks Joshua!
I was trying to figure out why the "flying" music from Hook made me think of something else. You NAILED it!
I ususally don't mind Johnny's "recycling," after all, we should all be so fortunate as to have a recognizable style. And besides, who else does "flying" music as well as JW?
(and yes, if you have an answer, I'd love to hear it)

Re: fave scores
Thu, January 22, 2004 - 7:24 PMI keep avoiding answering this question because it seems like the answer could be different everyday. <g>
Two today might be:
"The Virgin Suicides" - Air
"Batman" - Danny Elfman -
-
Re: fave scores
Thu, January 22, 2004 - 10:26 PMMy favorite Danny Elfman has got to be "Edward Scissorhands." -
-
Re: fave scores
Fri, January 23, 2004 - 4:23 PMYes, that's another great Elfman score. I think that's a really wonderful pairing, Elfman and Burton. -
-
Burton/Elfman
Sat, January 24, 2004 - 5:21 PMI agree. Elfman tends to compose some of his best music for Tim Burton, whether the film is any good or not. I think that a director/composer relationship often has an impact on the quality of a score. When there is a lot of trust, there can be a lot more creativity.
Some of the most important:
Hitchcock/Herrmann
Cronenberg/Shore
Schaffner/Goldsmith
