One of my latest projects is centered around teaching children about sound effects, using only those items that they would normally find around their own home or classroom. What I am looking for is to locate an experienced Foley artist who can advise me on the gear that they would use and techniques that would be appropriate for young children, ages 6 to 12.

I am selling a duplicate copy of Orchestration by Walter Piston (1955) that I received as a birthday present. I still have my original copy for constant reference, and I would respectfully advise and composers, be they film composers or concert composers, to keep a copy of Pistons Orchestration on their shelf for guidance and reference with regards to orchestration.

I thought this might be a good location to find composers interested in such a book. Due to lack of takers, I've just thrown it up on ebay for auction. If you are interested you can find it there:

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZdunboyne

Bidding starts at $22.95 which is nearly HALF PRICE. It's a steal for anyone interested.

About the Book
In this book, Walter Piston again draws upon his own wide knowledge and experience as composer and teacher to present all phases of the subject of orchestration. No practical aspect of instrumentation for the orchestra is neglected, and comprehensive treatment is given to each significant section.

The author approaches orchestration from the premise that the principles can best be presented by analysis of music as it has been written. The essentials of instrument combination discussed here are those which can be observed operating in the scores of great composers from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven down to our day.

Orchestration is notable for the clarity and logic of its organization. From a consideration of the individual instruments and their technical problems the author skillfully develops his analysis of orchestration, covering instrumentation of primary and secondary melodies, part writing, chords, and contrapuntal techniques. Finally, he discusses typical problems in orchestration together with some examples of thier solutions.

Orchestration is profusely illustrated with hundreds of musical examples and with drawings of the various musical instruments that make up the modern orchestra.

Walter Piston was Professor of Music at Harvard University. An outstanding composer whose many works have been performed by leading orchestras and chamber ensembles both here and abroad, he received the Pulitzer Prize twice for distinguished musical composition.

With me, it is particularly relevant for musicians who records music on a film score - so that their performance is signed over forever.
I would like to keep it simple so that both musican and I are comfortable with the release and the legalese is not to complex for people - I'm not trying to take their life, but I don't want to get sued due to some silly misunderstanding either.

Warm greetings.

I am so happy to have found this tribe! I think I have something special to offer.

I am a professional musician and I am happy to connect with musicians of all levels. I love music scores for film and I feel that I have something powerfully unique to offer.

Music is my prayer. I connect with Spirit in music. My love started young, learning the western traditions with piano, guitar, chorus, musical theater. Later I learned a deep and profound power when I lived in West Africa for a couple years.

The West African musical tradition is rich in spiritual connection. Originally studying Djembe, I fell in love with the Kora, the 21-string harp used by the griots of the great kingdom of Mali. It is a mystical instrument that takes time to learn, but it is truly a sublime instrument of spiritual power.

I also have learned to play the Dan Tranh, the 17-string zither of my own homeland, Vietnam. With the Dan Tranh I connect deeply with my ancestors and convey the indominable strength and spirit of my people. The sound of the Dan Tranh; the pentatonic major scale, the smoothly bending notes, the glissando of running over the row of strings... all this can bring the mind and heart into a meditative state as well as bring great joy.

These instruments reach in and grab the listener on an emotive level and they do that in a very direct manner. I can see it working especially well in film. I frequently play these during healing sessions (I also am a practitioner of acupuncture/Chinese medicine) and it drops my client into an immediate state of open and calm joy. They can also convey the full spectrum of emotions in a very sublime manner, when played by a one who is well trained in the traditions.

I have learned to play these instruments under the guidance of masters of the traditions. This teacher/student relationship itself produces profound spiritual growth.

I hope to work with composers and producers for film. I love to jam, network and exchange ideas.

I greet you all
hands together
bowing deeply.
I have a question regarding use of classical music such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven etc in a soundtrack. When it comes to publishing rights what is done? I mean, If we were to record a string quartet or movement of a concerto for a score, how do we go about getting the rights to the piece? Do we just automatically have them as it is public domain music? Or is it?

I would assume that its PD and there is no publishing due, but, assumption is sometimes the mother of all fuckups as they say, so no harm in asking!

What I'd like to do is get a little practice scoring some film or video clips within Logic, create a file of my score over that clip. Any tips on how to go about this? Tutorials, websites, etc.? Just started reading over the synchronization chapter in Logic, which is just the basic nuts & bolts. I'd like to know how some of you guys are scoring for student & indie films and stuff.

Yeah, so Williams is a bit of a plagiarist and is very much a composer who likes to beat you over the head with notes (the word "bombastic" is usually floating around in any review of a film he's scored) but you have to admire his subtle works like "Schindler's List" or the sweet harmonica leads of "The Sugarland Express." Not to mention that he's written what are arguably the most famous themes in movie history: "Star Wars", "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" and "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial." Sure, he's done little or nothing of merit in recent years (The "Harry Potter" scores are rehashed bits of "Witches Of Eastwick", "Hook" and oh, why go on?) but the man has written some seriously wicked stuff.

And that's all I have to say. : )

i was recently approached to help out on the sountrack for a grad student film production that may reach an international film festival. i am new to this side of music and wanted to find out as much as possible regarding the legalities of putting others' music into a film that may be viewed by a good number of people.
i would love to hear from anyone who has worked on scores, large or small budget, and was mostly concerned with enhancing the visual medium, more so than profiting from any kind of score release.
i planned on working crudely out of a Mac G4, primarily Pro Tools, with midi capabilities, studio. But i am definitley open to suggestions of software that may assist in any way.

Any advice is certainly appreciated. Thnax in advance...
